At Peterson’s, we believe landscaping is about more than simply planting a few flowers or mowing a lawn.
We transform spaces. We build relationships. And we create outdoor spaces where people want to live, relax, and spend time with their families.
Our Peterson’s design team has more than 80 years of combined experience here in north Texas designing, building, and maintaining landscapes. We have the talent to makeover your landscaping in the matter of a few days. We can make your place more inviting for your family to venture outside. We have worked on all kinds of projects over the years, but our favorite projects are the ones where we get to take a space that feels plain, tired, or even lifeless and bring new life into it.
There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a landscape go from “this just isn’t working” to “this feels like home.”
And there is another part of this business that we love just as much.
At Peterson’s, We Build Relationships
We are a people business.
We don’t just want to work on your house once and disappear.
We want to build relationships with our customers as their lives change.
People grow.
Families grow.
People change jobs.
People move.
Sometimes they move from one house to another. Sometimes they move from a home into a business. Sometimes they simply want their outdoor space to change as their lives change.
We want to grow with you.
I have customers who have followed me through multiple companies over the years, and I enjoy working with them every single time.
One recent project is a perfect example.
Where we started
A New Home, a New Opportunity, and a New Backyard
This customer had outgrown the home she had been living in and was given an opportunity to move closer to where she worked.
Her new house came with something her family had never had before:
A SWIMMING POOL IN THE BACKYARD
For the first time, her kids could experience those long summer days playing in a pool right outside their back door.
That was an exciting new chapter for the family.
But there was one problem.
Solving a Drainage Problem Around the Pool
The landscape bed behind the pool had been built up too high with dirt and rock.
There was also another issue. The neighboring landscape was higher than her backyard.
During heavy North Texas rains, water would come down from the neighboring property and wash muddy debris toward the pool.
Nobody wants to spend their summer cleaning mud out of their swimming pool.
So before we worried about making the backyard beautiful, we needed to make it work properly.
We lowered the landscape bed behind the pool and removed excess dirt along the edge. We then installed new rock in the bed to create a cleaner and more functional landscape area.
We also addressed one of the beds along the neighboring property by installing tough, durable plants that could help hold the soil and stabilize the area.
The result was a backyard that looked better and functioned better.
And that’s an important part of landscape design.
Good landscaping isn’t just about what looks good. It is also about how the property works.
The Front Yard Needed To Match Her Style
The backyard was about solving a problem.
The front yard was about creating something completely new.
The homeowner wanted her house to feel like her.
She didn’t particularly care for the existing redbud tree or crepe myrtle, so she asked us for something new, something fun, and something fresh.
So we started over.
We removed nearly all of the existing landscaping. We initially thought we might be able to save and incorporate a few plants, but once we started putting the new design together, we realized that the existing plants simply didn’t fit.
Sometimes a landscape renovation means keeping what works.
And sometimes it means starting fresh.
Adding Texas-Friendly Plants
For the new landscape, we used a combination of ornamental plants and Texas-friendly landscape choices.
We incorporated Sunshine Ligustrum and other plants to provide structure and color, along with a Vitex positioned approximately 7 to 8 feet away from the house.
That placement gives the tree room to grow while helping keep its future canopy manageable around the home.
We also incorporated Texas-friendly plants such as:
- Henry Duelberg salvia
- Lantana
- Sunshine Ligustrum
- Vitex
The goal wasn’t simply to fill the flower beds.
The goal was to create a landscape that would mature into something beautiful and functional for the family.
The Process
New Sod to Finish the Transformation
We also decided to resod the front yard.
Why?
Because there is no reason to make beautiful changes to your flower beds and landscape and then leave an unhealthy or unattractive lawn surrounding them.
Green grass creates contrast.
It makes the plants stand out.
It frames the flower beds.
And it helps tie the entire landscape together.
The new sod gave the front yard the clean green foundation the new landscape needed.
Rebuilding the Flowerbed Borders
We also removed the old flowerbed borders and installed new layered flowerbed edging.
But there was another challenge.
The existing brick walkway had clearly seen better days.
It appeared to have been installed by a previous homeowner, and it wasn’t level or uniform.
It had that classic “I’ve got a bunch of leftover bricks and I guess I’ll make a walkway” look.
You know the one.
There was nothing really wrong with the individual bricks.
The problem was that the pathway didn’t have a consistent design or grade.
So we removed it.
A New Paver Walkway
In order to create a level pathway, we had to extend a small retaining wall along the right side of the walkway.
That allowed us to establish the proper grade and create a more stable foundation.
We then rebuilt the walkway using pavers that complemented the home.
The finished pathway was level, firm, uniform, and much more intentional.
Instead of looking like something added as an afterthought, the walkway became part of the overall landscape design.

From a Landscape She Didn’t Love to a Space That Feels Like Home
When we finished the project, we had done much more than install new plants.
We transformed the property.
We solved a drainage problem around the pool.
We rebuilt the landscape beds.
We installed new rock.
We added durable Texas-friendly plants.
We installed new sod.
We rebuilt the flowerbed borders.
We replaced the old brick walkway with a new paver pathway.
And most importantly, we created an outdoor environment that felt more like her home and worked better for her family.
More Outside Time. Less Screen Time.
There is another reason we love creating outdoor spaces.
We believe our families need more time outside.
- Less screen time.
- More outside time.
- More conversations.
- More backyard memories.
- More opportunities for kids to explore nature.
- More time together.
So we’re going to say it:
GET OFF THE SCREEN.
GET OUTSIDE.
TOUCH SOME GRASS.
We want to create outdoor spaces that are friendly, inviting, and enjoyable for the entire family.
Because a beautiful landscape shouldn’t just be something you look at through the window.
It should be somewhere you want to go.
